Toronto KOI has made its first major roster move of the year, officially benching José "ReeaL" Castilla and signing rookie Nicholas "Kips" Lyons from the Huntsmen. The decision comes after a string of inconsistent performances to open the season that currently has them 10th in the season standings, as Toronto looks to reset its direction heading into the next stretch of matches.

ReeaL was a star player last season with the Miami Heretics, which made him one of the hottest free agents this offseason. While he showed flashes of impact during his time in the starting lineup for KOI, particularly in Overload, the team struggled to find sustained success across all three game types. With results not matching expectations, Toronto’s front office opted to explore a new look rather than wait longer into Stage II for improvement.

Enter Kips, one of the more promising rookies in Challengers this year. Competing with the Huntsmen roster from the start of the year, Kips built a reputation for himself as one of the up-and-coming SMGs & quickly had his name on the shortlist of multiple franchises. His performances drew serious attention from multiple teams, including New York after Stage I, but Toronto had originally signed him as a substitute but decided to inject him straight into the lineup.

Jumping from Challengers into a starting CDL role is never easy, especially with mid-season pressure of a bottom 4 team, but Toronto is betting on his ceiling and composure translating to the pro level. As Stage II unfolds, all eyes will be on Toronto as they aim to crawl out of 12th in the Stage II standings.
